Wisdom is a much smaller system if it is broken down into
exclusive categories. Understanding the general import of each
category grants the fundamentals of wisdom. And since wisdom is
so fundamental, on some level much of what remains is simply to
indulge and ruminate on the fundamental truths, such as by
asking the questions 'What?' or 'Why?'.
General wisdom is knowledge of what assures and permits
It is knowledge of the psychology and logic of wisdom. It concerns
things such as human nature, age, immortality, and omniscience.
Expert wisdom is the wisdom held by certain professions. It is a
way to serve the interest of the self and society.
The question to ask is 'is this expertise desirable?' and 'Is it a
good bargain to acquire it?'
Life wisdom is wisdom about the way of the world, the way of
success and failure, wealth and poverty. It involves dealing with
hardship, how to be comfortable, and how to overcome failure.
It often involves hard work, firm resolve, dedication to principles,
and the ability to treat oneself and others with comforts and
politeness. Some spiritual leaders have concluded that ethics is
the answer to life wisdom.
Another form of wisdom is less about responding to long-term
stress than it is about dealing with temporary hardship or the
unexpected. This is also called being street-smart, or evolving to
cope with life's ups and downs as they happen.
